SHIPMATE
MEMORIAL

|
Day is done,
gone the sun,
From the hills,
from the lake,
From the skies.
All is well,
safely rest,
God is nigh. |
Go to sleep,
peaceful sleep,
May the soldier
or sailor,
God keep.
On the land
or the deep,
Safe in sleep. |
Love, good night,
Must thou go,
When the day,
And the night
Need thee so?
All is well.
Speedeth all
To their rest. |
Fades the light;
And afar
Goeth day,
And the stars
Shineth bright,
Fare thee well;
Day has gone,
Night is on. |
Thanks and praise,
For our days,
'Neath the sun,
Neath the stars,
'Neath the sky,
As we go,
This we know,
God is nigh. |

LEO HOLDEN
FEBRUARY 13, 2009
I am so sorry to tell you that Leo died in August 2004. He went in
to the hospital in March for gastric bypass surgery / stomach
stapling. There were complications... a leak, a second surgery,
kidney failure, infection after infection. He was put on a
ventilator on the sixth day. He was in intensive care for 5 months
before he died. He put up a good fight but his body could not hold
out.
I miss him very much as I know his shipmates miss him too,
Margy Holden

Harold Lloyd Ackley passed away 10/07/08. He had been ill
for some time. He had always wanted to attend a reunion of the Carpenter, it
was one of his favorite duties. He was buried with full honors @ Dallas
- Forth Worth National
Cemetery 10/10/08.
I was trying to find a way to
get this information on the website. My Fathers name was Lester A. Burns (
L.A.) from Rincon , Ga. He served on board the Carpenter from 1951 -
1953. I wanted to get it posted that my father passed away on August 27
2008. He had been fighting various illnesses for the past few years. He
passed away just a few days shy of his 76 birthday on Sept 1.
thank you ,
John Burns
Capt. James D. Morrison, USNR, passed away at home on Mercer Island, WA,
August 31, 2008 at age 73 after a two month brutal battle with Acute
Leukemia. Dad loved his time aboard the USS Carpenter. Lucky for me, his
1957 to 1958 assignment docked him in Honolulu where he met his wife of 49
years. The World lost a good man, father, husband, and Patriot.
Smooth sailing to all of you from an Air Force guy!
Capt. James D. Morrison Jr. (1983 -- 1992)
F-15 Eagle Driver

Henry Gerald Ehleringer,
On Saturday evening July 19,
2008, Henry Gerald Ehleringer,
84, passed away at his Beavercreek
home surrounded by members of his
family. The nation has lost another
dedicated serviceman.
Born in Newell, S.D., on Oct. 15,
1923, Hank was raised on a farm in
Vale, S.D., during the Great
Depression. He was a gifted high
school athlete, reaching the national
championships in high hurdles and
leading his small high school to the state basketball championship.
He graduated with a degree in mathematics from Lewis & Clark
College, although his college education was interrupted by service
in the Pacific theater with the U.S. Navy during World War II.
Hank briefly worked for Bonneville Power, but then devoted the
remainder of his professional career to the U.S. Navy, where he saw
action in World War II, the Korean conflict, the Suez crisis, and the
Vietnam War. His extended tours of duty overseas meant yearlong
deployments away from home, sacrificing time away from his wife
and family for the service and protection of this great country. A
dedicated
and natural leader, Hank served at-sea and ashore assignments
for the U.S. Navy, including the USS Ranger (CV-4), USS Carpenter
(DDE-825), USS Salem (SA-139), USS Hamner (DD-718), USS Chicago
(CG-11), and USS Willard Keith (DD-775), Fleet Anti-Air Warfare
Center, Armed Forces Staff College, and the Joint Staff, U.S. Military
Command Vietnam. He also served liaison roles between the U.S.
government and the governments of Vietnam and the Philippines. He
had command of both the USS Hamner and USS Willard Keith.
After a distinguished military career, Hank retired and he and his
wife built a home in Beavercreek. He quickly became engaged in
both his church and in local outdoor organizations. He was very
active in the St. James Catholic Church in Molalla, where he helped
foster development of the parish for three decades. Hank loved and
appreciated the United States so much that he and his wife took
many cross-country trips to enjoy its scenery and to meet with relatives
and colleagues he had worked with over his career. He was
active in the Oregon Steelheaders, the Portland Regional Gem and
Mineral Association, and the Oregon Rockers, a rock hound club.
Hank is survived by Betty, his devoted wife of nearly 60 years; his
children, James (and wife, Edna), Bruce (and wife, Merele), Duane,
David (and wife, Debra), and Susan (and husband, Donald); eight
grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 25, 2008, at
St. James Catholic Church, 301 East Francis Street, Molalla, OR 97038,
followed by a reception. This will then be followed by a full military
graveside burial ceremony in the Willamette National Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to the Willamette Falls Hospital
Foundation, 1500 Division Street, Oregon City, OR 97045; or to the St.
James Catholic Church, 301 East Francis Street, Molalla, OR 97038.
Henry G. Ehleringer

It brings me great sadness and a complete
loss to inform You that Joe Leutza passed away early Saturday morning
February 2, 2008 after his long battle with throat cancer and then on their
49th Anniversary January 7, 2008 Joe was diagnosed with advanced lung
cancer. He passed away at home with his family beside him.
Sue and I will be attending the funeral on Wednesday February 6, in
Millbrea, California.
Joe was raised in SF and attended school graduated from Riordan High School.
He also went to and graduated from San Francisco City College He joined the
Navy in 1953 and was assigned in SF for a short time. From SF he was sent to
Guam. In 1954 he was assigned the USS Carpenter and made his first West Pac
Cruise. He made his second West Pac Cruise in 1955 returning in 1956. At
that time, due to being a short timer he, like me, elected to be
transferred to another ship and go back to West Pac. He went to the USS
Philips for his 3rd West Pac Cruise, I went to the USS Nicholas for my 4th
West Pac Cruise.
There is a short article in the San Francisco Chronicle regarding Joe, Once
you get on that page click on obituaries and put his name in then hit
search.
I know his wife, Joyce, would appreciate a card or two from his shipmates or
from the Carpenter Association. His address is 42 Willow Ave Millbrea, Ca.
94030
Sorry to bring you this sad news as we move forward into a new year.
Take Care,
Roy Beebe
